The Pontiac City Council is the legislative branch of Pontiac City Government. There are seven Members of the Pontiac City Council. Members of the City Council are directly elected by the voters of Pontiac and serve four-year terms. They represent one of the seven City Council Districts in our City, and they live in the District they represent. You can find out which District you live in by consulting the District Map, or by contacting our offices. You are welcome to call or email your City Council Member with any questions, concerns, or ideas.

Pursuant to the Pontiac City Charter, the Council meets once a week. They currently meet every Tuesday evening at 6:00 p.m. in Council’s Chambers, located on the second floor of Pontiac City Hall. The Mayor or any two (2) members of the Council may call a special meeting of the Council upon at least 10 hours written notice to each member served personally or left at the member(s) place of residence. However, any special meeting at which all members of the Council are present or have given written consent shall be a legal meeting for all purposes without such written notice.

The Pontiac City Council has Adopted Rules and Procedures for conducting effective meetings; those Rules outline how the meeting will be conducted. Additionally, in the spirit of promoting integrity and transparency in local government, the City Council has adopted a Pontiac City Council Code of Ethics. Each Council member has pledged to take their roles and responsibilities in serving the City of Pontiac and its residents very seriously. Each Council member also seeks to ensure that governmental decisions are made in the public’s best interests and aims to prevent Council members from making government decisions that would impact their personal or financial interests. Implementation of the Code of Ethics, as well as the City Council's Adopted Rules and Procedures, further facilitates orderly and efficient meetings.

Council meetings are open to the public and are televised on Pontiac’s government access channel, Facebook, YouTube and Livestream. Residents that would like to speak to the Council are encouraged to do so. If a resident would like to address an item that is on the agenda, there is a section on the Agenda entitled “Agenda Address.” However, if there is an issue that is not related to any specific item on the Agenda, the resident can address the Council during “Public Comment.” In order for the resident to be recognized to speak, the resident has the option of going to the Clerk’s Office prior to the meeting and signing the appropriate clip board or waiting until the day of the Council meeting to sign the appropriate clip board, before 6:00 p.m.
