The 2009-2010 Youth Basketball League will be starting soon. The season starts Jan. 9th and ends Mar. 13th, with a single elimination tournament starting Mar. 15th. Many city services will be unavailable as City Hall will be closed including: Executive Office, City Council, Finance, Treasury, Human Resources, Retirement, Information Technology, Block Grant, Assessors, Law, Growth Group, and Downtown Development Authority. Services at the Wesson St. facilities will be closed including: DPW Engineering, Sign Shop, Electrical Shop, Equipment Maintenance, Building & Safety, and Planning. Other closed services include: Parks & Recreation, Water Department, Parking Administration Open, but with limited staffing will be : Cemeteries, Wastewater Treatment Plant, Fire Inspectors & Administration, Police Administration Operations that will continue on Furlough Days will be: Police, Fire & EMS Services, Library, Senior Centers, Golf Course, Parking Enforcement, Certain Code Enforcement and Televan |
The City Clerk's offices will be open on Friday, October 30th from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and on Saturday, October 31st from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Absentee voters will be able to vote in the Clerk's office until 4:00 p.m. on Monday, November 2nd. |
Players and Sponsors are needed for the 1st Annual Oakland County 5th & 6th Grade Basketball League. The games will be played at the Oakland Community College Building H Gymnasium at 2990 Featherstone Rd., Auburn Hills MI. Cost is $30 per player or $300 for a team of 10. |

| A Water Main Break has occurred in the area of Auburn Road and South Shirley St. The road is closed due to flooding. All crews were dispatched immediately to control the flooding, clear catch basins, close the road, salt, and shut the water main down so repairs can be made.
Estimated time for repairs could be 3 to 8 hours. Once the water is off and the road is safe to travel, one side will be opened up. Some businesses and homeowners may be without water or experience low pressure during the repair.
Despite the frigid temperatures, all work crews are working diligently. Your patience is appreciated. |

Remember, the raking of leaves into the street is now prohibited. Residents are encouraged to mulch the leaves and place in flower beds. Pontiac/ONYX curbside refuse collection customers can dispose of leaves on their scheduled refuse collection day by setting leaves at the curb on collection day now through Friday, November 28th, in paper compost bags or in appropriately designated and marked containers. The Michigan Primary election will be held on Tuesday, August 5, 2008. Nominees for Senate, Congress, State Legislature and County-wide office will be selected. The election of judges for the Circuit, District and Probate courts will also be held. A millage proposal is also on the ballot to support the Oakland County Zoological Authority.. Upcoming Classes Bug Identification is a three hour training session that allows volunteers to practice their "bug" (macroinvertebrate) identification macro identification skills. The organisms we find while sampling enable us to evaluate water quality conditions. The session will be on Tuesday, April 8, 2008 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the LLoyd A. Stage Nature Center, 6685 Coolidge Highway, Troy, Michigan 48098. Field Training. Plan to get your boots wet! We'll head streamside to review all of the monitoring protocols. Team up with other participants to fine-tune your skills and master the art of capturing "bugs" in preparation for our May monitoring day. This training will be held outside, so dress appropriately. Sec. 114-187. Parking on snow emergency routes restricted. (a) Parking on snow emergency routes shall be prohibited under the following conditions: Whenever the director finds, on the basis of falling snow, sleet, or freezing rain, or on the basis of a forecast the U.S. Weather Bureau or other weather service of snow, sleet or freezing rain, that weather conditions will make it necessary that parking on city streets be prohibited or restricted for snow plowing or other purposes, the director shall cause to be put in effect a parking prohibition on parts of or all snow emergency routes as necessary by declaring it in a manner prescribed by this article. (b) Once in effect, a prohibition under this section shall remain in effect until terminated by announcement of the director in accordance with this article, except that any street area which has become clear of snow and ice from curb to curb for a length thereof lying between two successive street intersections shall be automatically excluded therefrom. While the prohibition is in effect, no person shall park or allow to remain parked any vehicle on any portion of a snow emergency route to which it applies. (c) Nothing in this section shall be construed to permit parking at any time or place where it is forbidden by any other provision of law. (Code 1985, § 26-185) |

CODE OF THE CITY OF PONTIAC Beginning May 1 and continuing through September 30th, all grass, weeds, brush, and other harmful vegetation above the height of eight (8) inches must be cut, destroyed or removed and the property maintained. The owner is responsible for maintaining the area between their property line and the traveled portion of the street. If a property is found to be in violation of this code when inspected, the property owner will be fined up to $500.00. If the violation persists, the property will be cut and all costs associated with the service will be billed to the property owner. In accordance with the Chapter 122-75, property owners will not be notified individually when a property is in violation. This Public Notice serves as proper notification for all property owners in the City of Pontiac. CHAPTER 122, ARTICLE II, TREES & SHRUBS Any tree or shrub which is infested with any injurious insect, pest or plant diseases which are liable to spread, or trees or shrubs which may otherwise be detrimental to the peace, health, and safety of persons or property are declared a nuisance. Property owners shall keep properties free from injurious matters such as dead or diseased trees and shrubs, which may be declared as a nuisance. If a property is found to be in violation of this code when inspected, the property owner may be fined up to $500.00. If the violation persists, the nuisance will be abated and all costs associated with the service will be billed to the property owner. |

Enjoy great entertainment from 200 performers to suit any musical taste at stages set up around the downtown area. 50 area restaurants will be serving their specialties at kiosks throughout downtown. 150 local, national and international artisans will be selling their art from booths up and down the streets of Pontiac.

The American Diabetes Association is bringing a free awareness seminar to Pontiac on Tuesday May 8th, from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Pontiac Public Library on 60 East Pike Street. This free one-hour program is designed to provide basic education about diabetes care. All classes are conducted by a certified diabetes educator. |
Pontiac celebrates the homecoming of the world-reknowned Jazz pianist Hank Jones on Saturday, May 5th at 7:00 p.m. at 30 North (Saginaw at Lawrence). Eighty-eight-year-old Jones backed such artists as Charlie Parker and Ella Fitzgerald and recorded prolifically under his own name. He is looking forward to returning to Pontiac, where he first studied music, graduated from the public schools, and performed professionally. "I'm looking forward to returning to Pontiac. I have a lot of fond memories of the city and my family--it's where my roots are." |

Onyx/Veolia customers may set out Christmas trees for collection on their scheduled refuse collection day during the first two weeks of January ONLY. Trees will be composted so all stands, lights, & decorations must be removed prior to set out. Trees should be set out laying on their side with the trunk facing toward the street and set out at least 3 feet away from the tipper cart. Artificial trees are not compostable and are not included in this Christmas tree collection schedule. Unwanted artificial trees should be dismantled or cut up & placed in the tipper cart for disposal. |

| A Water Main Break has occurred in the area of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd and South Blvd. Residents are asked to be prepared for low water pressure and for temporary shut offs while the water main is being repaired. Residents are asked to limit their water use until the problem is fixed. |
The practice of Pontiac residents raking leaves into the street for City pickup and disposal has been discontinued. The raking of leaves into the street is now prohibited. Residents are encouraged to mulch the leaves and place in flower beds. Pontiac/ONYX curbside refuse collection customers can dispose of leaves on their scheduled refuse collection day by setting leaves at the curb on collection day now through December 9th, in paper compost bags or in appropriately designated and marked containers. Other Pontiac residents, businesses & property owners should make private arrangements for disposal of their unwanted leaves. The Pontiac/ONYX landfill and compost site accepts leaves for composting and is currently open for business Monday through Saturday, except most holidays. The Pontiac paint-based business Akzo Nobel has joined forces with the City of Pontiac and its Mayor to assist Pontiac residents. They have contributed over twenty-five-hundred (2,500) gallons of paint for residents. If you are a Pontiac resident, homeowner, renter or landlord with houses in Pontiac, you are eligible to receive this paint. The paint must be used for these resident homes only. | Kennett Road will be closed at the bridge over the CN railroad from July 12 - November 1, due to bridge reconstruction. The reconstruction will necessitate the closure of Kennett Road between Cherry Hill Street and the driveway to the VFW. Local access to businesses and residential areas will remain open but no traffic will be able pass through the construction area. The scope of work will encompass the total reconstruction of the bridge and associated roadway approaches to bring it up to current design standards. The total cost for this work is approximately $1.1 million dollars and is funded 95% by the Federal/State Critical Bridge program while the remaining 5% is the city’s responsibility |

On Saturday, October 30th, 2004 the Pontiac Police Department will host its Annual Harvest Festival from 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at Aaron Perry Park, behind the Community Resource Center (251 East Rundell). The event is free to all Pontiac children; but they MUST be accompanied by an adult. Participants can park at the Glenwood Plaza and take a free shuttle over to the fun.This year's theme is "Mayberry Michigan USA", (Andy Griffith Show) building on the fact that Pontiac's crime rate has been steadily declining. Harvest Festival offers a safe and fun alternative to the usual mischief associated with October 30th, and it directly reflects in the lack of devil's night related calls for service to the Pontiac Police Department. The event includes hayrides, games, police displays, and our "Meet N Treat" tent, where volunteers and businesses pass out candy. Last year over 5000 were in attendance. The festival would not be possible without the terrific support of the Greater Pontiac businesses and community groups who so unselfishly donate their time, money and resources to support this event. |

The City of Pontiac Employee and Retiree Appreciation Picnic has been rescheduled for Saturday, August 29th from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Beaudette Park (Dawson Mill Pond on Orchard Lake Rd.). There will be games and prizes, face painting, pony rides, food and beverages. There will also be sports, including a Departmental Softball Competition.

Two of Pontiac's own will be honored at this year's Grammy Awards.
Jazz pianist Hank Jones will be receiving the Recording Academy's Lifetime Achievement Award. Jones has been a top pianist since the days of swing and bebop. In the early fifties he played with both Ella Fitzgerald and Charlie Parker, and, at 90 years old, continues to record and perform with leading jazz artists.
The Four Tops will be honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award. Pontiac's Ronnie McNeir has been singing with the Four Tops since 1999. This gifted pianist and singer has been a part of the Gospel, Soul, R&B and Jazz scene since the 1960s and has won international acclaim for his music.

Construction has begun on Walton Boulevard between Perry (M-24) and Squirrel Road. The road will be widened from 2 lanes to 5 lanes, including replacing the Walton Blvd. bridge over I-75.

Remember, the raking of leaves into the street is now prohibited. Residents are encouraged to mulch the leaves and place in flower beds. Pontiac/ONYX curbside refuse collection customers can dispose of leaves on their scheduled refuse collection day by setting leaves at the curb on collection day now through Friday, November 28th, in paper compost bags or in appropriately designated and marked containers. The Second Annual "Clean Park Initiative" will be held every Saturday from 12:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m from May 10th through August 30th at Hawthorne Park located on North Telegraph Rd. between Walton Road and Dixie Highway. The American Diabetes Association is bringing a free awareness seminar to Pontiac on Tuesday May 8th, from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Pontiac Public Library on 60 East Pike Street. This free one-hour program is designed to provide basic education about diabetes care. All classes are conducted by a certified diabetes educator.
Pontiac celebrates the homecoming of the world-reknowned Jazz pianist Hank Jones on Saturday, May 5th at 7:00 p.m. at 30 North (Saginaw at Lawrence).
The City of Pontiac's Department of Public Works would like to remind all property owners and persons responsible for property in Pontiac that all front sidewalks must be cleared of snow and ice within 24 hours of the cessation of falling snow, sleet, or freezing rain.

The 2006 METRO-MICHIGAN JAZZ BAND COMPETITION will be held on Saturday, May 27th beginning at 8:30 a.m.which will include High School and College bands from around the State. A free concert will follow at 5:30 p.m. which will feature the 1st Place Band from the competition as well as internationally renouned Jazz artists like Quincy Stewart, David Carthan and Marion Meadows.
PONTIAC HURRICANE RELIEF EFFORTS UNDERWAY WITH VICTIMS’ FUND

The Pontiac Police Department has launched a new program called CURVE (Children Unloading Reactions to Violent Encounters). This program's purpose is to assist children who have witnessed or have been victims of violence by referring them to the appropriate agencies.

The Michigan Recycling Coalition has recognized the North Oakland Household Hazardous Waste Consortium (NO-HAZ) as the 2004 Outstanding Household Hazardous Waste Program. Pontiac is one of 16 communities that are a part of NO-HAZ, which provide residents with a safe disposal alternative for home toxic waste and its comprehensive education and outreach campaign.
City Offices will be closed Friday, December 23rd and Monday, December 26th in observance of the Christmas Holiday. City Hall will re-open on Tuesday, December 27th.City Hall will be closed Friday, December 30th and Monday, January 2nd in observance of the New Year's Holiday. City Hall will re-open on Tuesday, January 3rd. Pontiac/ONYX refuse collection will be delayed one day during the weeks of December 25, 2005 & January 1, 2006 due to holiday observances on Monday December 26, 2005 and Monday January 2, 2006. Monday routes will be collected on Tuesday and so on with Friday’s routes being collected on Saturday during both weeks. Extra Holiday Waste (wrapping, boxes, etc.) that is properly bagged will be collected the week of December 25th. Bags must not exceed 50 pounds. Pontiac/ONYX curbside refuse collection customers can dispose of “Live” Christmas trees by placing them at the curb on their scheduled refuse collection day during the first two weeks of January only.
Start the Holiday Season off with Pontiac's 2005 Holiday Extravaganza! Starting Friday, December 2nd, at 6:30 p.m., we'll light the Holiday Tree and have Community Caroling in front of the 50th District Court building. The Downtown Development Authority and Smooth Jazz V98.7 are hosting Jazz with the Stars on Saturday, September 17th at the Phoenix Center Amphitheatre in Pontiac. It'll be a full day of incredible live Smooth Jazz...and admission is just a $5 donation to the Fund the Music program! The Pontiac paint-based business Akzo Nobel has joined forces with the City of Pontiac and its Mayor to assist Pontiac residents. They have contributed over twenty-five-hundred (2,500) gallons of paint for residents. If you are a Pontiac resident, homeowner, renter or landlord with houses in Pontiac, you are eligible to receive this paint. The paint must be used for these resident homes only. The program will kick-off immediately and will remain in effect until all the paint is distributed.


The Pontiac Garden Club (P.G.C) will be hosting their third annual Garden Tour “The Hidden Treasures of Pontiac.” The tour will be Saturday, July 23rd from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Eight gardens within the city will be featured including the historic museum at Pine Grove and a tour of the mansion of Governor Moses Wisner. The City of Pontiac is requesting the donation of a pine tree to use in the City's Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony. The tree should be in good condition and at least 50' in height. All donations will be considered, however, only one can be chosen. The City will arrange to have the tree cut down and transported to the site of the Tree Lighting Ceremony. September 15th through October 15th is celebrated as Hispanic Heritage Month. There are a variety of activities in the Pontiac area featuring Dance, Music and Food. There are also health and service activities including the Siesta Town Hall Meeting for Hispanics, HIV/AIDS awareness day, and a visit from the Consulate of Honduras.

From August 20-22, Pontiac's First Lady, Brenda Payne will be participating the Breast Cancer 3-Day Walk benefiting The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. She will join thousands on a 60-mile journey as they help fund breast cancer research, education, screening and treatment programs, as well as the National Philanthropic Trust Breast Cancer Fund, to provide a permanent endowment for breast cancer initiatives.
Don't miss the re-opening of the Phoenix Plaza Celebration on Thursday, August 19th. The festivities will begin with the ribbon cutting ceremony from 12 noon - 2 p.m. The new amphitheater will feature a 3,000 seat covered pavilion area and an additional 3,000 lawn seat area. Let your heart rejoice in love and peace at the 2004 African-American Gospel Festival in downtown Pontiac. The Festival will be on Saturday, July 31st from 3 p.m. to 11 p.m. It features three heavenly musical entertainers, food, refreshments, 50/50 drawing, games for children and family events.
This year's Puerto Rican Festival 2004, is Saturday and Sunday, July 24th and 25th. The flag raising ceremony on Saturday at 11 a.m. kicks off the event.
